Wulf Hemp Genetics

Wulf is an inbred heirloom American hemp variety derived from feral Midwestern industrial narrow leaf hemp. Wulf Hemp genetics originated from an American family farm in Nebraska. Between 2011 and 2016 Wulf hemp was inbred in Western Colorado selecting for vigor and higher CBD content in anticipation of the oncoming CBD industry. Wulf Hemp expresses moderate CBD levels from 5%-10% and has never tested over the 0.3% legal limit for THC. Wulf is a truly low THC variety of industrial hemp that is suitable for production of CBD. Wulf hemp also has potential as a dual crop for CBD and fiber and tri crop for CBD, fiber, and grain. Beginning in 2016 Wulf Hemp was hybridized to many other established CBD hemp varieties. Since then field testing of Wulf Hemp Hybrids has stretched across the country (even abroad) and proven the hybrids to be market viable and compliant. Several Wulf Hemp Hybrids designed for CBD production are available in seed form for the 2021 growing season.

In 2011 a network of activists worked to preserve stands of feral hemp growing on a Midwestern family farm from law enforcement requests to destroy the plants and disrupt the soil.

The property owners knew this hemp grew from what was formerly a large industrial hemp farm tended by their grandfather in the early 1900’s. The property owners sought to preserve their family’s legacy as hemp farmers in America. The activist network contacted medical marijuana growers and offered the chance to visit this property to collect seeds from mature plants. This is how the hemp genetics would be preserved in case law enforcement efforts were successful in destroying the family farmland such that no plants would return in the future.

A successful professional vegetable farmer and skilled marijuana cultivator brought a stash of these feral hemp seeds to Colorado for experimentation where legal protections for cultivating cannabis uniquely existed at the time. These seeds were inbred for several years and selected for vigor and higher CBD production. At this point in time CBD rich varieties of cannabis were extremely limited and hard to acquire. It took profound foresight to begin this project since at that time healing potential CBD was still esoteric knowledge among marijuana caregivers and select patients. After years of cultivation, selection, and breeding the CBD rich inbred seedstock became “Wulf", named for the activist who started this project and rallied key players around the common goal of preserving American cannabis genetics.

In 2016 Miles Filipeli became the steward of the Wulf Hemp project and has been moving it forward since then - he has continued to inbreed Wulf and produce bulk quantities. Miles’ breeding regime also out-crossed Wulf by combining it with some of the most promising CBD hemp strains available - Cherry Wine, Otto2, Cat’s Meow, Magic Bullet, Cannatonic, Baox and others. Wulf hybrids have proven to be very versatile and can thrive in different climates with various adverse conditions. Wulf and Wulf hybrids have been test grown in many states across America in these early days of the legal hemp industry. Testing has taken place primarily in Colorado and the Carolinas as well as Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, Vermont, California, New York and other states. Limited international tests have occured in Europe and Australia. Bulk seed production has been focused in Colorado and the Carolinas, regions with significantly different climates and growing seasons. Localizing genetics for greater suitability in different climates provides versatility for farmers. In 2019 Wulf and Wulf hybrid seeds have been mass produced in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina, the coastal plains of South Carolina, and the high desert of Colorado’s Western Slope - providing farmers with localized genetics for a variety of regions and elevations.

The Wulf variety has vigor and resistance to: mold, mildew, extreme temperature conditions, drought, wind and compacted/low fertility soil. Wulf hemp has low requirements for fertilizer in tests comparing it to other hemp varieties. Wulf hybrids have shown to carry many traits from the Wulf parentage, including resistances and low fertilizer needs, while improving upon cannabinoid levels, bud structure and diversifying terpene profiles. When planted densely in the field Wulf will grow columnar (without branches) making it suitable for fiber production. Regular Wulf hemp seeds have a solid 50/50 male/female rate, making it possible to overlap grain production with fiber for a dual crop purpose - in this setting CBD would be an ancillary aspect of the cultivation giving the versatility of tri-crop potential.
